Blake Griffin Announces Retirement from NBA

Former No. 1 Pick Ends Illustrious Career

April 16, 2024

Blake Griffin, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, has announced his retirement from professional basketball. The 35-year-old forward, who most recently played for the Boston Celtics, made the announcement via social media on Sunday.

Griffin's retirement marks the end of one of the most decorated careers in NBA history. Known for his explosive dunks and dynamic play, Griffin was a six-time All-Star, three-time All-NBA selection, and the 2011 NBA Rookie of the Year. He also played a pivotal role in the resurgence of the Los Angeles Clippers, leading the team to their first-ever Western Conference Finals appearance in 2019.

In recent seasons, Griffin's production declined as injuries began to take their toll. After leaving the Clippers in 2018, he had stints with the Detroit Pistons and Brooklyn Nets before landing in Boston last year. Despite playing just 41 games for the Celtics, Griffin provided valuable leadership and mentorship to a young team.

Griffin will be remembered for his high-flying dunks, electric style of play, and dedication to the sport. He leaves the NBA with a career average of 18.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. His impact on the league, both on and off the court, will be felt for years to come.
