Listeriosis Outbreak: Rizo-López Foods Recalls Queso Fresco and Cotija Cheese

FDA and CDC Investigate Multistate Outbreak

A multistate outbreak of Listeria has sickened individuals across the United States, prompting an investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with state and local partners.

Rizo-López Foods Identified as Source

Data analysis indicates that queso fresco and cotija cheese manufactured by Rizo-López Foods are the likely source of the outbreak. As a result, the company has recalled numerous dairy products, including these popular Super Bowl snacks.

Additional Recalls Issued

In a separate development, the FDA announced a voluntary recall of 58 dairy products produced by Old Europe Cheese Inc. The recall includes brie and camembert cheeses distributed to several states due to a potential Listeria contamination.

Symptoms and Prevention

Listeriosis is a severe infection caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening and may include fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal distress, and, in severe cases, meningitis or sepsis.

To prevent infection, it is crucial to practice proper food hygiene, such as washing hands before handling food, avoiding unpasteurized dairy products, and cooking meat thoroughly.

Consumers who have purchased recalled products are advised not to consume them and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
