The Rise and Fall of Liz Truss
From humble beginnings to Downing Street
Mary Elizabeth Truss was born on July 26, 1975, in Oxford, England. She studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Merton College, Oxford, and worked as an accountant and management consultant before entering politics. Truss was elected as the Conservative MP for South West Norfolk in 2010. She served in various ministerial roles under Prime Ministers David Cameron and Theresa May, including as Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor.
A swift rise through the ranks
In 2019, Truss was appointed Secretary of State for International Trade by Boris Johnson. She played a key role in negotiating the UK's trade deals with other countries after Brexit. In September 2021, Truss was promoted to Foreign Secretary. She was the first woman to hold this position since Margaret Beckett in 2007.
Becoming Prime Minister
In July 2022, Johnson announced his resignation as Prime Minister. Truss was one of the frontrunners to succeed him. She campaigned on a platform of tax cuts, deregulation, and a tough stance on immigration. Truss was elected Leader of the Conservative Party in September 2022, becoming the third woman to hold the position after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. She was appointed Prime Minister by Queen Elizabeth II on September 6, 2022.
A chaotic 45 days
Truss's time as Prime Minister was marked by chaos and controversy. She faced criticism for her handling of the economy, her plans to cut taxes, and her support for fracking. Her government was also embroiled in a number of scandals. On October 14, 2022, Truss announced her resignation as Prime Minister after just 45 days in office. She was succeeded by Rishi Sunak.
What's next for Liz Truss?
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Liz Truss. She has said that she will continue to serve as an MP and that she is "determined to make a difference in the world". Truss is a controversial figure, but there is no doubt that she is a talented politician with a bright future ahead of her.
